Previous Updates

3 March 2022

With one week to go until the Festival opening, we are excited to announce two more stage-to-screen premiere productions: Where Will They Bury My Bones? and ArteFact: How to Behave in a Museum.

Mark Work at Objectspace will now be opening on Sat 12 March.

25 February 2022

With just under two weeks to go before AAF 2022 kicks off, we’re thrilled to announce three more stage-to-screen opportunities: Live Live Cinema: The Little Shop of Horrors, Full Moon Online Folk Ball, and Courageous Conversations About Race™.

We are also excited to share that Someplace: A Travel Archive at Corban Estate Arts Centre is re-scheduled to open on Fri 4 March.

18 February 2022

We are elated to share that the world premiere of Waiwhakaata – Reflections in the Water will officially be online. Tune in from 8.00pm on Sat 26 March until 11:59pm Sun 27 March to watch contemporary dance, explosive and innovative physical theatre, taonga puoro, and kōrero tuku iho combine, bringing us a story of hope and reconnection. Tickets can be purchased here.

Unfortunately, the opening of Someplace: A Travel Archive at Corban Estate Arts Centre that was scheduled to happen this evening has been postponed by the Gallery. An online version of the exhibition will be made available in due course as well as a gallery re-opening date.

Courageous Conversations About Race™ and Full Moon Folk Ball remain cancelled in theatre or venue, but online options are continuing to be scoped. More updates will be available soon.

9 February 2022

The road to decision making for each of our more than 80 shows and events with over 700 artists involved has not been an easy one.

Unfortunately, with the high risk of infection to cast, crew, production, venue staff, and audiences, along with capacity restrictions for live events under RED in the traffic light framework, the AAF Board and Management have made the difficult decision to cancel all live events and performances – 51 in total – in venues, theatres, and outdoor spaces.

While we are incredibly disappointed to be hit with COVID related interruptions for the third year in a row, we know that this is the best way to keep everyone safe during this time.

We are delighted, however, to advise that the Festival is still going ahead with two international online works, three free outdoor installations/activations, 10 visual arts exhibitions, and two confirmed events moving online, plus further potential online streams that are currently being scoped. Two additional shows will also be postponed by their companies.

Artistic Director Shona McCullagh says: “We are well aware of the short, medium, and long-term impact this has on artists and the wider arts sector, who live to create, produce, and perform. This outcome – in which we cannot gather in person over a programme packed with joyful live performance and brilliant shared arts experiences – is deeply saddening. However, the Festival team and our artists are resilient and endlessly creative, and we will deliver a very special suite of safe events for our audiences in March, while at the same time turning our focus to 2023 with optimism and gusto.”

3 February 2022

Ngā mihi nui for your support and patience as the AAF 2022 team continues working through the many different scenario plans and framework options that were prepared in anticipation of another year with COVID interruptions.

We truly mean it when we say that the health, wellbeing, and safety of our artists, crew, and audiences is our number one priority, and remains at the forefront of all decision making.

With that said, we have a first update on several shows below. The remainder of the programme will be updated as soon as possible.

We are deeply saddened to not be able to proceed with the following shows:

24 January 2022

As Aotearoa moves back into RED under the COVID-19 Protection Framework, we send aroha to you all, and especially our friends and whānau in live events who are undergoing major impacts.

This is not our first time riding the wave of uncertainty, and we have many different scenarios in place for AAF 2022. We are just over six weeks out from our opening and working through the various framework options for our Festival. We will be in touch with more information as soon as we are able. For now, please stay safe and if you are unwell, get tested and stay home.

Kia kaha tātou. Kia haumaru te noho.

AAF 2022 COVID-19 Response

Our number one priority remains the health and safety of our artists, staff, crew, and audiences.

In line with the Government’s COVID-19 Protection Framework and the policies of our venues, audience members will be required to present a valid My Vaccine Pass to attend shows and events at AAF 2022.

Individual COVID-19 policies for each of our venues can be found here. Please take this into consideration when purchasing your ticket(s).

If this means you are no longer able to attend a show or event that you have purchased ticket(s) for, you are eligible for a refund. Please contact your point of purchase directly – details can be found here.

If AAF needs to cancel a performance you have purchased ticket(s) for due to COVID-19, you are eligible for a refund. Your point of purchase will contact you directly – there is nothing you need to do on your end.

All AAF COVID-19 Ticketing Terms and Conditions can be found here.
